A salsa dancing duo from Mt Pleasant will take a team of 10 to Sydney to perform in front of thousands of dancers from all over the world at the Sydney Latin Festival.
“It’s a huge festival in the world of salsa. There are workshops during the day and performances at night. We will be one of those performances,” Mrs Frost said.
She has been dancing with husband Warren for 17 years, since she first met him at a salsa class.
“I’ve danced jazz and ballet all my life and I finally decided I didn’t want to do exams anymore. So I went to a salsa class with a friend, and met Warren there.”
Soon afterwards they started the Latin Fire Dance Academy in town together, and teach there as well as running children’s hip-hop and salsa classes at the Mt Pleasant Memorial Community Centre.
Mrs Frost said that teaching is very rewarding work.
“When new couples come in, you see the guy doesn’t want to be there and he has just been dragged along by his wife. But they’ll both be hooked after a couple weeks.”
The Frosts are also working on their own routines leading up to competitions this year.
“We’ve got a South Island competition and nationals coming up this year, then we’ll have to train over Christmas for the Latin festival in January.”
Their routine, to Uprising by Muse, was selected because of its energy and intensity, Mrs Frost said.
“It’s really powerful.”
