The Salsa Freestyle category divisions are:
Who is eligible for the Salsa Freestyle category?
The Salsa Freestyle divisions are restricted to Amateur Salsa dancers. Amateur means a student or dancer who has never received any money from teaching or performing Salsa or a related Latin dance. If you are uncertain about whether you qualify as an Amateur Salsa dancer, please contact the organisers to seek clarification. If you have received any money for teaching or performing Salsa or a related dance, then please register in the Choreographed Performance divisions.
Basic Rules - What to expect
- Dancers in the Freestyle divisions will compete on the dance floor together to DJ selected Salsa music

Depending on number of entries competitors may be grouped into Heats + Final.
- If there are enough numbers for Heats, each Heat will have 1 piece of Salsa music of medium tempo approximately 3 minutes in length.
- The top 5 couples will progress to a Final.
- Excessive choreography is discouraged.
- The Beginners Final will have 1 piece of Salsa music of medium tempo approximately 3 minutes in length.
- The Improvers and Intermediate/Advanced Finals will both have 2 pieces of Salsa music of slow/medium and then medium/fast tempo - each approximately 2 minutes in length.
What are the Judges' criteria?
- Dancers will be judged on their ability dance Salsa in a lead / follow format. Shines (dancing individually) are allowed.
- Division specific judging rules are listed below.
Division Details
Dancers cannot enter more than one Freestyle category. Please ensure both dancers in the couple meet the criteria for the category. If you are uncertain please contact the organisers to seek clarification.

Beginners Division (Less than 6 months)

This division is for Amateur Salsa dancers who have:
- Not been dancing Salsa for more than 6 months (as at the date of the competition).
- Not competed above “E Grade” in Latin/Ballroom Competitions.

Guidelines:
- The judges will be looking for a good understanding of Salsa basic steps: Cross Body Lead / Right Turn / Lady Turn / Basic Insider Turn (or Half left turn) / In Line Turn (or cross body lead turn).
- No dips, drops or lifts allowed!!

This division is for Amateur Salsa dancers who have:

Improvers Division (6 months - 1 year)
- This division is for Amateur Salsa dancers who have not been dancing Salsa for more than 1 year (as at the date of the competition).

Guidelines:
- The judges will be looking for a good understanding of the basics of Salsa (as per above) plus Copa / 360 collect / 1 1/2 travelling turns / double spot turns (for confirmation of any of these moves please ask the your studio or the event organisers).
- Up to 2 assisted dips per song are allowed (where the follower keeps 2 feet on the ground).
- No drops or lifts allowed!!

Intermediate/Advanced division (1 year or more)
- This division is for any Amateur Salsa dancers!!

Guidelines:
- Up to 3 drops or dips (where dancers keep at least 1 foot on the ground) per song are allowed.
- No lifts allowed.

Freestyle Salsa Judging Guidelines
Couples will be judged on the following criteria for each song:

Timing
- Do the dancers exhibit an understanding of recognisable Salsa rhythm and timing?
- Do they consistently maintain their rhythm and timing?
- Do they use the music appropriately?

Couples can dance ‘On 1’ or ‘On 2’, but must maintain consistency throughout the competition.
- Note: competitors should not be interchanging 1 and 5 if dancing ‘On 1’, or interchanging 2 and 6 if dancing ‘On 2’.

Execution
- Do the dancers execute their dance moves with good technique and fluidity?
- Do the dancers exhibit complementary and consistent partnering and connection in the lead/follow format.?
- Are the basic level Salsa moves exhibited and mastered?

Performance
- Do the dancers present themselves with confidence, energy and stage presence?
- Is their dancing aesthetically pleasing?
- Do the dancers project to the audience where appropriate and capture their attention?
- Do dancers use the breaks, hits of the song and present good musicality?

For the Intermediate/Advanced and Open Couples divisions only:
- Do the dancers successfully execute movements of increased difficulty??
- How effortlessly are these movements performed?

The Choreographed Performance divisions are:
Who is eligible for the Choreographed Performance category?
This Category is open to all dancers Amateur and Professional Salsa / Latin dancers alike.
Please see the Division details for eligibility information for each division.
Basic Rules - What to expect

Music for each choreography should be supplied on CD format (2 copies) with only one music track per CD, at least 1 week before the competition.
- CDs must be labelled with the Division, name of Team/Couple & Track duration.
- Note: If not received before this time you may be disqualified!
- Technical Rehearsals can be provided. Contact the organisers for a rehearsal time.
Division Details
This division is open to any dancer (ie, both Amateur and professional Salsa/Latin dancers).
The division consists of both a Salsa Freestyle component and Salsa Choreography component.
Freestyle component (20%):
- Dancers will be judged on their ability dance Salsa in a lead / follow format.
- Shines (dancing individually) are allowed.
- Excessive choreography is discouraged.
- All couples will dance will compete on the dance floor together to DJ selected Salsa music.
- Couples will freestyle to 2 pieces of Salsa music of slow/medium and then medium/fast tempo - each approximately 2 minutes in length.
- No lifts, drops or dips are allowed during the Freestyle component!!!
- In the Freestyle component dancers will be judged in accordance with Freestyle judging guidelines above.
Choreography component (80%):
Following the Freestyle component, dance Couples will each perform their choreography, one at a time, to their own Salsa music.

Style rules
- A maximum of 5 lifts and drops (together) allowed.
- Any number of dips are permitted.
- Routines can only have a maximum of 30% shines (dancing individually).
- No props are allowed.
- NOTE: While dancing and performing lifts, jumps etc. dancers need to exhibit good understanding of salsa rhythms, footwork and partner connection.

Music Guidelines (please read carefully as points will be deducted if these are not followed)
- Music to be between 1.5 to 2.5 minutes.
- Music to be 100% salsa music.
- Mixing: A maximum of 3 songs can be mixed for one routine.
This division is open to all Salsa Teams with a minimum of SIX dancers

Style rules
- Groups perform one at a time to their own music.
- Minimum of 6 dancers in each team.
- Routines can only have a maximum of 30% shines (dance individually). (‘Shines’ teams: Please enter the Street Latin Team Division.)
- No props are allowed.

Dancers may compete in only 1 Salsa Team only.
- However dancers may also compete in the Street Latin Teams division.

- Music to be between 1.5 - 3 minutes.
- Music to be 100% Salsa music.
- Mixing: A maximum of 3 songs can be mixed for one routine.
Open to any genre of 'Street Latin' (Bachata, Salsa, Zouk, Cha Cha, Reggaeton, Merengue). Music to suit the style of dance you are performing.

- Teams can perform as couples in a lead/follow format and/or do Shines (dance individually).
- Minimum of 6 dancers in each team.
- No props are allowed.
- Competitors may compete in only 1 Street Latin Team . (However dancers may also compete in the Salsa Teams division)

- Music to be between 1.5 - 3 minutes.
- Music should be at least 80% in the genre of their style of Street Latin, with the other 20% being available for any style of music.
- Mixing: A maximum of 3 songs can be mixed for one routine.

- Are 'highlights' on time?

Couples/teams can dance ‘On 1’ or ‘On 2’, but must maintain consistency for the duration of the routine.
- Note: competitors will be deducted marks for interchanging 1 and 5 if dancing ‘On 1’, or interchanging 2 and 6 if dancing ‘On 2’.
- How synchronised is the couple during their side by side movements or shines?
- How synchronised is the team during combinations, shines, lines, hands & feet and body movement?

- How well put together is the choreography?
- What is the aesthetic and stylistic quality of the choreography?
- Does the routine flow easily from one movement to the next?
- How well do they use the stage space?
- Do the dancers dance with movements and steps that match the music?
- How original is it?
- Any lifts/tricks, highlights and step sequences should not interrupt the flow of the dance.
- Does the dancer's styling add to the performance?
- What is the level of difficulty of the combinations utilised?
- How intricate are the shines?
- What is the difficulty of any lifts/tricks?
